
Tito Mboweni, South Africa’s former finance minister and Reserve Bank governor, has passed away at 65 due to a short illness. His family confirmed the sad news, expressing devastation and requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Mboweni was a key figure in South Africa’s economic landscape, serving as Minister of Finance from 2018 to 2021 and Governor of the South African Reserve Bank from 1999 to 2009. He was also the first Black South African to hold the post of Governor. Born on 16 March 1959, in Tzaneen, Limpopo, Mboweni grew up to become a respected economist and politician.
During his tenure as Minister of Labour, Mboweni played a crucial role in shaping South Africa’s post-apartheid labor laws. He also served as Chairman of AngloGold Ashanti and International Adviser to Goldman Sachs International.
Mboweni’s passing was announced on 12 October 2024, with tributes pouring in from various sectors. He is remembered for his contributions to South Africa’s economic development and his commitment to public service.
