The Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, is urging motorists to be cautious when driving because four people were killed in a side-swipe collission between a light delivery vehicle (LDV) and a sedan on the N4 toll road on the Hendrina turn-off inĀ Middelburg.
Three of the deceased were occupants in the LDV, this include the driver of the vehicle and an infant. The fourth victim was the passenger in the sedan vehicle.
Two people were critically injured, and one person, the driver of the sedan, sustained serious injuries. The injured were rushed to the nearby Middelburg Hospital for further medical attention.
Ealier indications are that the LDV overturned several times on the side of the road after colliding with the sedan. Both vehicles were reportedly travelling in the same direction during the time of accident.
The cause of the crash is not known at this stage. The investigation into the collission is already underway.
MEC Macie is further advising motorists to avoid speeding all the time, especially when visibility is reduced.
“Motorists must be on high alert at all times when they are on the road. When visibility is restricted, drivers must reduce speed. Those who are driving long distances should rest sufficiently along the way to avoid crashes brought on by fatigue,” Macie says.
