Papa Penny, a renowned Xitsonga disco music legend and reality TV show star, has made a significant impact in Giyani after ditching the African National Congress (ANC) for the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma.
He was a councillor for three terms at the Greater Giyani Municipality but resigned, citing mistreatment by ANC leaders.
Despite facing backlash online, with many saying he’d regret his decision, Papa Penny has been appointed as a member of Parliament for the MK Party. He’s now focusing on convincing his community that he can do more for them from his new platform.
Recently, Papa Penny celebrated the MK Party’s milestone of 1000 members in ward 5, drawing large crowds reminiscent of a rally. He’s vowed to expand the party’s presence in other branches, aiming for a total takeover in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Papa Penny’s move to the MK Party stems from his frustration with the ANC’s handling of community issues, such as boreholes in his area. He believes Jacob Zuma will listen to his concerns and address the needs of his community. The MK Party has welcomed him, citing his invaluable experience and connection with the artistic sector.
