A tactical operation targeting cross-border smuggling in Musina led to the arrest of two undocumented foreign nationals, aged 20 and 47, on Friday, 4 October 2024. Acting on credible information, police intercepted a group of around 70 individuals fleeing with boxes of illicit cigarettes near Musina Golf Club.
Upon arrival, the suspects abandoned the boxes and scattered, but officers successfully apprehended two individuals for violating the Customs and Exercise Act, Import and Export Control Act, and Illegal Immigration.
The suspects will appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 7 October 2024. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal syndicates involved in illicit cigarette smuggling across the province.
Similar successful operations have taken place in the province, including the interception of a convoy carrying illicit cigarettes worth over R1 million on 23 August 2024.
