The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo is facing trouble after its Chairperson, Thabo Mashabela, ditched the party to join former President Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
Mashabela cited “friendship and favouritism” as reasons for his resignation, expressing frustration over the growing culture of cronyism within the EFF’s provincial and national structures.
Mashabela’s departure is significant, especially since the EFF has been working to solidify its base in Limpopo ahead of the upcoming general elections. His defection to the MK Party, which has been gaining traction, signals potential turbulence for the EFF as internal dissent grows.
The MK Party has welcomed Mashabela, with Zuma praising his decision as a “victory for true revolutionaries.” Political analysts suggest Mashabela’s move could shift the political landscape in Limpopo, resonating with disgruntled EFF members. The EFF has yet to comment officially but is reportedly holding an emergency provincial meeting to address the fallout.
This development comes amid other significant changes in Limpopo’s political scene, including Linda Sibiya joining the EFF and Letsiri Phaahla leaving ActionSA for the MK Party. As the landscape evolves, all eyes are on whether more high-profile EFF members will follow in Mashabela’s footsteps.
