Frederick Chauke, a 26-year-old truck driver from Tembisa, Gauteng, originally from Malele, Limpopo, has won the prestigious National Driver of the Year title, surpassing over 1,400 fellow drivers from the Shoprite Group’s fleet.
Chauke’s exceptional driving skills, which he attributes to his father’s guidance, earned him this esteemed accolade. His father, a former truck driver for the South African government, taught Chauke the importance of responsible driving during their trips together.
Chauke’s journey with Shoprite began in 2021 when he joined the company through a learnership program. He secured permanent employment in 2022 and has since consistently demonstrated his skills and dedication.
The National Driver of the Year competition showcased Chauke’s precision, technical knowledge, and skill, as he excelled in a written exam, a yard challenge, and a road test. Ruaan Britz, Shoprite Group’s Head of the Transport Centre of Excellence, praised Chauke’s achievement, highlighting the company’s commitment to investing in continuous training for its drivers.
As a role model in his community, Chauke encourages young people to consider a career in truck driving, citing the fulfillment and support he receives from Shoprite.
