In the face of economic recession and unemployment, a 26-year-old entrepreneur, Jerry Mokgokgothi Mosima, from Praktiseer, took matters into his own hands. Instead of searching for a job, Mosima created his own lucrative shoe washing business in Burgersfort, Limpopo.
Inspired by a social media post, Mosima started small, using liquid soap from his kitchen during the lockdown. He built a shelter, put up a signboard, and began washing shoes for the community. His business flourished, and he now employs three people, providing them with a steady income.
Mosima’s business generates over R8,000 in a good month, and he charges R60 per pair of shoes. His goal is to expand his business, opening branches in other parts of the country, including Burgersfort, Janefurse, Steelpoort, and Polokwane.
As a young entrepreneur, Mosima’s advice to his peers is to turn their struggles into opportunities. He encourages them to be creative and find ways to make a living, rather than relying on others or loitering on the streets.
