
In a significant blow to illicit activities, Operation Vala Umgodi teams have arrested 11 foreign nationals and seized illicit tobacco products worth over R21 million and three illegal firearms in Limpopo. This success is part of a broader effort to combat crime and illicit mining in the province.
Three undocumented Zimbabwean nationals were arrested in Musina on 25 September 2024, for transporting illicit tobacco products worth over R21 million. Five Zimbabwean nationals were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, with three firearms and 74 rounds of ammunition seized. Three more Zimbabwean nationals were arrested for possession of dagga, with over 110 kilograms seized, valued at R137,000.
Since its activation in December 2023, Operation Vala Umgodi has recorded over 6,000 arrests nationwide, with a significant presence in seven hotspot provinces. The operation involves various specialized units, including National Intervention Unit (NIU), Crime Intelligence (CI), Public Order Policing (POP), Tactical Response Team (TRT), Border Policing, Airwing, Drone teams, Detectives and K9 units.
These efforts demonstrate the South African Police Service’s commitment to combating organised crime and ensuring public safety.
