Giyani man sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment for raping a minor stepdaughter

The Giyani Regional court has on Monday 12 May 2025 convicted and sentenced a 36 year-old male accused, to 20 years direct imprisonment following a rape incident involving an eleven year-old step-daughter.
On Wednesday 28 May 2024, the victim was with her stepfather, ( who”s identity is withheld to protect the victim) inside the house at Giyani Section F while her mother was on night duties at her workplace.
The court noted that accused had sexual intercourse with the victim and the next day on Thursday 29 May 2024, he requested his wife to arrange a family meeting because he had a burning issue that should be addressed infront of the family members.
The meeting was arranged and a 36 year-old step-father revealed that he had sexual intercourse with the child and it was not for the first time.
The local Social Workers were informed about the matter and they advised the mother of the minor victim to report it to the local police and a rape case was immediately opened .
Sergeant Maropeng Alpheus Mashapa attached to Giyani Detectives managed to apprehend the suspect the same day on Thursday 29 May 2024 and successfully opposed bail until the accused was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment.
