Shikhumba Village was abuzz today as Boss Lady, the wife of prominent water drilling businessman Kokwani Chauke, made headlines by betting a staggering R120,000 to her Maseve during a Xiseveseve ceremony.
Xiseveseve, a significant Xitsonga cultural practice, is a communal stokvel where friends, mainly women, contribute money to support each other during special events such as graduation parties, birthdays, housewarmings, and initiation school celebrations. However, this marks the first time such a substantial amount has been pledged, raising eyebrows due to the financial risk involved—especially if the recipient fails to return the favor in the future.
The hefty contribution sparked debate on social media, with many questioning the implications. Some netizens sympathized with Kokwani Chauke, warning that such public displays of wealth might attract unwanted scrutiny from the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Others compared the situation to the legal troubles faced by Royal AM boss Shaun Mkhize, who faced tax issues after flaunting her wealth.
Despite the controversy, the gesture has certainly made history in Shikhumba, setting a new benchmark for Xiseveseve contributions.
