Fetakgomo Tubatse Mayor Eddie Maila Leads Initiative to Donate School Uniforms to Impoverished Learners

In a remarkable display of compassion and community leadership, Eddie Maila, the mayor of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality, took a hands-on approach to address the challenges faced by students in rural areas. Together with members of the municipality’s executive committee, Maila visited Mokutung Primary School, located in the remote village of Mokutung (Ward 1), to personally distribute school uniforms to impoverished learners struggling with poverty.

Maila explained that the initiative was inspired by his recognition of the barriers faced by learners whose parents are unable to afford basic school supplies, including uniforms. “I identified learners whose parents are unable to provide them with proper school uniforms, which often leads to absenteeism and decreased self-confidence,” he shared.

The “Back to School” campaign aims to not only provide students with essential clothing but also to restore their confidence, reduce absenteeism, and improve school attendance. For many of these children, a lack of proper school attire is a major obstacle to attending school regularly, which ultimately impacts their academic performance.

“We’ve identified both primary and secondary schools to benefit from this program,” Maila said, emphasizing that the goal is to improve the quality of education in the Fetakgomo Tubatse area. The donation drive is part of the municipality’s broader efforts to address educational challenges in rural and underserved communities.

In his address, Maila also reiterated his call for active involvement from local councillors, ward committees, and community members. He urged them to participate in school activities and play an active role in supporting the local education system.

“We are appealing to social partners, businesses, and philanthropists to donate to the Mayoral School Uniform Campaign,” he urged, “so that we can extend our reach to even more schools and learners in need.”

Research has shown that children who attend school are more likely to expand their worldview, dream bigger, and set higher goals for their futures. However, the difficult circumstances many of these children face—poverty, hunger, and the inability to afford school supplies—often impede their ability to realize those dreams.

In rural areas, families frequently rely on social grants for survival, making it nearly impossible to afford essential items like school uniforms, shoes, stationery, and school fees. This financial hardship directly affects their children’s education, leaving many unable to attend school regularly.

Despite these challenges, the Fetakgomo Tubatse municipality has refused to let the tough circumstances of its residents prevent them from striving for better opportunities. Through initiatives like the Mayoral School Uniform Campaign, they are committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has access to education and the resources needed to succeed.

The municipality’s efforts serve as a beacon of hope, showing that even small acts of generosity and solidarity can make a world of difference in the lives of young learners and their communities.
