A remarkable story from Limpopo made headlines in 2013, when Thabitha Nangoma unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby girl inside the Tubatse Police Station. Now, with her daughter Basetsana turning eleven this year, Thabitha is urging the business owners of Burgersfort to throw her daughter a birthday party, recalling the extraordinary event that brought joy to her life.
The birth took place in the police station’s boardroom after Thabitha experienced sudden labor pains. At the time, she was already expecting and had visited the nearby Praktiseer Clinic for assistance. However, the nurses at the clinic informed her that it was too late to provide help, as they had already clocked out for the day.
Desperate for help, Thabitha walked approximately three kilometers to the Tubatse Police Station, hoping to be transported by ambulance to Dilokong Hospital. Hours passed without any sign of the ambulance, and Thabitha began to feel the intensity of her labor. With no medical help arriving, she prepared herself for the unexpected and called out for assistance due to the unbearable pain.
In a heartwarming turn of events, police officers at the station, affectionately known as “women in blue,” rushed to her aid. They assisted her in getting into a comfortable position and, with the help of a generous policewoman who provided a towel, helped deliver the baby right there in the station. The station was soon filled with laughter and joy as little Basetsana entered the world, crying loudly as she made her entrance.
When the ambulance finally arrived, it helped with cutting the newborn’s umbilical cord, and both Thabitha and her baby were safely transported to Dilokong Hospital. The two were admitted to the maternity ward for care, and after receiving necessary treatment, they were both declared healthy.
In a symbolic gesture, the police officers named the newborn “Maphodisa,” a Sepedi name that translates to “Police” in honor of the remarkable birth that took place within their station. The Tubatse police visited Thabitha and her newborn daughter at the hospital, donating clothes and expressing their support.
Reflecting on the event, Thabitha expresses deep gratitude: “God is great. I love my daughter,” she says. Now, as Basetsana approaches her eleventh birthday, Thabitha hopes to celebrate
