A 38-year-old Bangladeshi national, Hossain Akiet, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Phalaborwa Regional Court for raping a 10-year-old girl in Namakgale on May 8, 2022. The victim was sent to a supermarket by her grandmother, where Akiet, the shop owner, locked her in and assaulted her.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Sergeant Sharlot Luphondo-Mkansi from the Phalaborwa Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Akiet’s bail was denied until his sentencing. The court also ordered his name to be registered in the National Register of Sex Offenders.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, has issued a stern warning to potential sexual assault offenders, emphasizing that the police will do everything in their power to ensure perpetrators face justice. This sentencing serves as a strong message that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated.
