The Phalaborwa SANCO Youth Congress, led by Katekani Mthisi, affectionately known as “According to Kat,” took to the streets on Friday, 28 March 2025, demanding justice for the late Ralven Ntshuxeko Shikwambana. The peaceful march culminated at Namakgale Police Station, where the youth leaders submitted a memorandum calling for swift action against the perpetrators.
Shikwambana, a 24-year-old photographer from Gavaza village in Tzaneen, was brutally murdered in his room at Namakgale Zone C on Saturday, 22 March 2025. Police reports indicate that officers discovered his room door wide open, with his lifeless body lying in a pool of blood near the entrance. He had sustained multiple stab wounds to his chest and hands, suggesting a violent struggle before his death. Despite the horrific nature of the attack, his photography equipment remained untouched, leaving the motive behind the killing unclear.
The march, which saw a large turnout of youth and community members, was a demonstration of growing frustration over the perceived lack of progress in the investigation. Speaking during the protest, Mthisi emphasised the need for justice and accountability.
“The brutal killing of Khatlas Photographer has left our community in shock. We demand urgent intervention from law enforcement to ensure that those responsible are brought to book. This is not just about Shikwambana, but about the safety of all young creatives who contribute to our communities,” he said.
Participants carried placards with messages such as “Justice for Khatlas Photographer” and “Stop the Killings,” while chanting slogans that echoed their demands for action.
Namakgale SAPS officials received the memorandum and assured the marchers that investigations were ongoing. They urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the case.
Shikwambana was a well-known and talented photographer whose work captured the beauty and vibrancy of local life. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the creative community, with many calling for stronger safety measures for artists and independent professionals.
As the investigation continues, the community of Namakgale remains hopeful that justice will be served. The SANCO Youth Congress has vowed to keep the pressure on law enforcement to ensure that the case does not go cold.
