Residents of Winterveld in Gauteng are expressing frustration over the ongoing issue of illegal dumping along the roadsides, which is obstructing traffic and creating a health hazard. The rubbish, often strewn across the road, makes it difficult for vehicles to pass, and the neglected space has become a hideout for criminals who use it for illicit activities such as drug abuse.
One affected community member, who owns a shop near the dumping site, has reached out to the municipality to raise concerns about how the waste is driving away customers due to the unbearable stench. He, like many others, is frustrated that the landowner refuses to allocate the space for proper use, which could prevent further dumping.
Maria Madekwane, a resident living next to the dumping site, expressed her relief at recent cleanup efforts. “I’m so happy because they are finally cleaning up. The smell has been affecting me and my family badly, causing us to suffer from flu frequently. We can’t even confront those who dump here because they argue that the land belongs to Mr. Munyelo, and only he has the authority to address the issue.”
Lawrence Masilele, a local business owner, emphasised the severe impact on their livelihoods. “We called the municipality to clean up because this situation was negatively affecting our businesses. We took it upon ourselves to help clean up as a way of giving back to the community, even though we didn’t receive any support or donations.”
Another concerned resident, Sam Ndlovu, pointed out the broader issue of inadequate service delivery. “We don’t have proper waste management in our community, which is why people use this open space as a dumping site. It’s near the road, and some even perform rituals and dispose of dead animals here, causing terrible odors and health problems. Winterveld is often neglected when it comes to service delivery, and I believe the land should be sold to a private company rather than relying on the government.”
The community is now calling on authorities to intervene and provide dustbins for each household. They believe this initiative could help reduce illegal dumping and improve overall cleanliness in the area. Residents are hopeful that their plea will be heard and that lasting solutions will be implemented to address this pressing issue.
