A 48-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested at Beitbridge Port of Entry in the early hours of Tuesday, 11 March 2024, for allegedly smuggling explosives worth over R600,000.
Police stopped a white MAN truck with Gauteng registration during a routine search at South Gate. The driver, who was unable to provide keys to the truck’s side storage, was directed to another zone, where officers forcibly opened the compartment. Inside, they discovered eleven red sacks containing suspected explosives.
The Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the scene and confirmed that the items were indeed explosives. A total of 2,118 cartridges and sixteen 250-metre reels of detonator cable were seized.
The suspect, who failed to provide a valid explanation for the explosives, was immediately arrested. He is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of smuggling explosives.
