Bushbuckridge police officer Sergeant Nyiko Nyathi, 42, was arrested by her colleagues and appeared in court for allegedly orchestrating the murder of her husband and another woman.
Her late husband, Lawrence Alba Mashego, 44, was kidnapped in February last year by a group of armed men at his home in Boikutsong Trust, Mpumalanga. The suspects robbed him of his Toyota Quantum and Ford Escort before taking him to Victoria Lebyane’s home in Zoeknog. Lebyane, believed to be Mashego’s girlfriend, was in possession of his bank cards.
The suspects stole R4,000 in cash from Lebyane, along with Mashego’s bank cards, before fatally shooting her. Four suspects were arrested in connection with the crime, and one has since pleaded guilty.
Following a thorough investigation, police identified Sergeant Nyathi as the alleged mastermind behind the murders. She is currently in custody and is set to appear in court on Wednesday for a bail application.
