Mbhangazeki High School in Xikukwani village, Nsami, Mopani East District, Giyani, is facing a dire infrastructure crisis. Despite producing stellar Grade 12 results, with learners passing with stars, the school is severely overcrowded, with some classes having more than 83 learners.
The school’s enrollment has ballooned to 1168 learners, exacerbating the infrastructure shortage. The School Governing Body (SGB) has repeatedly requested assistance from the Department of Education’s circuit and district offices, but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The crisis at hand is overcrowding: Classes are overflowing, with some having more than 83 learners. Infrastructure Shortage: The school lacks essential facilities, including mobile classes, desks, and toilets. Unfulfilled Promises: The Department of Education has failed to deliver on its promises to provide assistance.
The SGB is taking matters into their own hands, visiting the District office to highlight the issue and seek immediate attention. They have also extended an invitation to Limpopo Current Affairs officials to visit the school and witness the crisis firsthand.
As the school struggles to provide a conducive learning environment, the Grade 12 history class is being held under a tree, a stark reminder of the urgency of the situation.
With the rain pouring down, the learners’ determination to learn is being tested, and it’s imperative that the necessary support is provided to ensure their education is not compromised.
