Nelson Mandela’s grandson is among five suspects arrested for their alleged involvement in a car hijacking incident in Johannesburg.
The suspects, including Mandela’s grandson, were taken into custody at the former Mandela family home in Houghton, where a hijacked Toyota Corolla and an unlicensed firearm were found.
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the victim’s car was hijacked on Louis Botha Avenue, and the suspects were tracked down using the vehicle’s tracking device. Fortunately, the victim is safe and unharmed.
This incident raises concerns not only about the safety of citizens but also about the state of the Mandela family home, which has fallen into disrepair. The Houghton residence, once a symbol of Mandela’s legacy, has recently attracted media attention due to its deteriorating condition.
The suspects will face charges of car hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms. This is not the first time a Mandela family member has been involved in a controversy, as another grandson, Mbuso Mandela, was arrested in 2022 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and drugs.
