Obed Mokone Moabelo, the 58-year-old accused of murdering his wife, Dorris Kedibone Moabelo, has been denied bail amid community outcry.
The dramatic scene unfolded outside the Mahwelereng Magistrate Court, where members of the community, joined by the Young Urban Girls Movement and the Mogalakwena Concerned and Affected Communities (MCAC), picketed in protest, calling for justice and opposing bail for Moabelo.
The incident, which occurred on 11 December 2024, has left the community in shock. According to reports, Dorris was stabbed in the back in front of their children, who desperately cried out for help as their father dragged their mother outside and continued to stab her.
During his bail application, Moabelo claimed that he was the primary caregiver for his children and that they needed his care. However, Investigating Officer Sergeant Matjeke opposed the bail application, citing concerns that Moabelo posed a threat to the witnesses, including his own children.
The court ultimately denied Moabelo’s bail application, citing concerns that he might attempt to harm his family or tamper with evidence. Moabelo has been remanded in custody until 12 February 2025.
