Residents of Tswinga and Tshitomboni, outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo, are reeling in shock after discovering thousands of dead fish floating in the Nandoni Dam. Provincial authorities have collected water samples for analysis, but the cause of the mass fish deaths remains a mystery.
Philip Munyai, a community leader, expressed concern over the incident, stating that the sheer number of dead fish is alarming. “There are a lot of dead fish – enough to fill three bakkies. This is a warning to community members because people are allowed to fish, but once you see a dead fish, how can you take it? You don’t know what killed the fish,” Munyai said.
The Department of Water and Sanitation has launched an investigation into the matter, with spokeswoman Wisani Mabasa confirming that teams have been sent to collect water samples and determine the cause of the fish deaths.
Local hawkers are also feeling the impact, with some expressing relief that they don’t sell the affected fish species, while others worry about the loss of income.
As the investigation continues, residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid eating or touching the dead fish. The community remains on high alert, awaiting the results of the investigation and hoping for a swift resolution to the mysterious fish deaths.
