Despite being diagnosed with blindness at the age of 14, Boikanego Molewa, a 15-year-old learner from Praktiseer, outside Burgersfort, refuses to let his disability define him. With a strong determination to succeed, Boikanego is determined to overcome the challenges that come with his condition.
Boikanego’s journey with blindness began last year, and he has been struggling to cope with the loss of his sight. He is often ridiculed by his peers at school, and he wishes to be donated spectacles to help him see properly.
“It’s very difficult to cope with the preparations for trial exams,” Boikanego said. “I sit in the front row in class, but I can barely see the board.”
Despite the challenges he faces, Boikanego is determined to pursue his education and achieve his goals. “It took me many months to accept that blindness will not determine my destiny,” he said. “I want to focus on my education first and work tirelessly until I reach my goal, which is success.”
Boikanego lives with his mother, Mahlatse Molewa, in a small backroom at his grandmother’s house. Despite his disability, he manages to cope with household chores without any assistance.
Boikanego’s dream is to become an optometrist one day, so he can help others who are struggling with similar vision complications. His mother, Mahlatse, is appealing to anyone who can assist in buying spectacles for her son.
The family is struggling to make ends meet, relying on a child support grant to survive. They live in a shack and have been waiting for years for a low-cost house to be built. “A proper house will restore our dignity,” Mahlatse said.
The family is also appealing for donations of learning aids, such as a calculator and cellphone, as well as school uniform items, including a bag, black school shoes, gray trousers, and a sky blue shirt. Anyone willing to assist this family can do so.
