A 34-year-old mother of two from Limpopo is appealing for a low-cost house to be built for her family, in an effort to restore their dignity. Phoku, who suffers from bipolar disorder, shared her heart-wrenching story of how she was left homeless after her family’s house was destroyed in a fire.
The family, including her children Nonthando (4) and Thando (10), has been left emotionally and physically scarred. With no other means of support, they rely on a social grant to survive. Phoku’s parents passed away when she was just a child, leaving her to care for her siblings.
Currently, the family rents a house for R400 per month, using the social grant to cover this expense. However, this leaves them with insufficient funds to purchase basic necessities like food. Phoku is urging anyone willing to help to provide assistance with clothing, school uniforms, and blankets.
Moreover, Phoku expressed her frustration with government officials, who have visited her family several times, promising to build them a house, but have yet to fulfill this promise. “We feel that our right to proper housing and shelter is being violated,” she said.
