A man has been arrested for possession of suspected precious metals and intimidation following an undercover police operation at an illegal mining site in Spitskop, Sekhukhune District.
The arrest took place on Thursday, 10 July 2025, around 13:30, when the Vala Umgodi Task Team conducted a covert operation at Portions 06 and 07 of the site. Officers posed as potential chrome buyers and engaged with three men believed to be involved in illegal mining. Upon realizing they were speaking to police officers, the suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving behind mining equipment which was later confiscated.
As the police were leaving, they were approached by a man driving a silver Mercedes-Benz. He aggressively questioned their presence and claimed to be the employer of the illegal miners. Officers searched the man and found a plastic bag containing what is believed to be gold.
The suspect was immediately arrested and is facing charges of possession of suspected precious metals and intimidation. Investigations are ongoing.
