A newborn baby girl was found wrapped in a bread plastic bag and dumped in the bushes at Lebjelola village in Ga-Sekgôpo, under the Greater Letaba Municipality, on Monday morning, 27 May 2025.
The baby was discovered by a cattle herder who was passing through the area. He immediately raised the alarm, and community members rushed to the scene to help.
“She is a girl, and we are just happy that she was found in time and rescued. It’s heartbreaking, but we are grateful for her safety,” said Ishmael Selapa, a local resident and witness.
Police from Modjadjiskloof responded to the scene and confirmed the incident. An investigation is underway, and authorities are calling on anyone with information about the baby’s mother or what led to the abandonment to come forward.
Meanwhile, community members are urging for more support for struggling mothers to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The baby was taken to a nearby clinic for medical care and observation.
