The family of Soyaphi Moses Hlungwani, widely known as Shaka, is grappling with frustration and unanswered questions after the suspect in his murder case was granted bail and the matter has faced numerous postponements.
Shaka, 64, was allegedly murdered by his wife, Orscarin Selina Hlungwani, 52, following a violent altercation at their home in Malungane village, Namakgale, on 27 August 2024. The next day, his family reported the incident to the Namakgale police, leading to Selina’s arrest.
Her legal proceedings began on 30 August 2024, when she appeared in court for a formal bail application, which was initially denied. She made subsequent appearances on 4 and 10 September, with bail ultimately granted at R1,000. Since then, the case has seen continuous delays, with postponements on 21 October, 26 October, 15 January, 24 February, and 27 March. The latest postponement has pushed the case to 22 April 2025.
During the most recent court session, the magistrate informed the family that the investigation remains ongoing, with additional evidence still being gathered. The court was also awaiting testimony from two key witnesses before proceeding further. The magistrate further stated that the case would be escalated to the regional court for further investigation.
Shaka’s family has expressed deep disappointment and concern over the slow pace of the justice system. They are struggling to understand why the case has not progressed despite the multiple court appearances.
“We just want justice for our father,” a family spokesperson Abel Mashila said. “The continuous delays are painful, and we feel like we are not getting any answers.”
As they await the next court date, the family remains hopeful that the regional court will expedite the process and bring them closer to justice for Shaka.
