What’s even more disturbing is the alleged embezzlement of R37 million meant for constructing a stadium in Ephraim, which now lies incomplete and has been turned into a cattle grazing field.
Seun Mogotsi, an opposition party member, expressed frustration over the municipality’s inaction, stating that residents have been waiting for years for the completion of the stadium, which was intended to benefit the poor and develop local talent. Mogotsi also questioned when contractors responsible for the shoddy workmanship would be held accountable.
The situation is further complicated by allegations of corruption and mismanagement of funds. For instance, R2 million was wasted on constructing a sports complex in a donga at Praktiseer, which was washed away by heavy rains. An audit also revealed that R88,000 allocated to youth projects may have been misappropriated, with R39,631.77 unaccounted for.
These incidents have eroded trust in the local municipality, with community leaders like Headman Mamogale accusing officials of enriching themselves at the expense of the community.
The lack of accountability and transparency has created an environment conducive to corruption and mismanagement, leaving residents to suffer the consequences.
