
A 39-year-old suspected illegal miner was arrested in Sekhukhune District on Saturday, December 14, 2024, after being caught with chrome valued at over R75,000.
The Multidisciplinary Vala Umgodi Task Team, in collaboration with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), conducted an intelligence-driven joint operation in the Apel policing area.
Upon arrival, the team found the suspect loading bags of chrome into his bakkie. He attempted to flee but was intercepted in Shushumela village.
Further investigation revealed additional bags of chrome at the suspect’s yard. He was arrested for illegal mining, possession of chrome, and is expected to appear in court on December 17, 2024.
In a separate incident, three suspects were charged with contravening environmental regulations after being caught illegally loading sand without permits in the Malipisdrift policing area. Each paid a fine of R1,500.
