Gauteng police have arrested more than 1,113 suspects during a high-density operation across the province, aimed at tackling serious crime.
The operation, Shanela II, which began on Saturday, 15 September 2025, was led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni. The operation targeted crime hotspots in all districts, with a focus on wanted suspects, gender-based violence, and drug-related offences.
Detectives apprehended 778 wanted suspects and made 193 arrests linked to crimes against women and children. Roadblocks in Mamelodi and Mamelodi East, personally overseen by Lieutenant General Mthombeni, led to the arrest of over 50 undocumented foreign nationals, 39 people for drunk driving, one person for dealing in drugs, six for possession of drugs, and one for possession of a dangerous weapon. Three liquor outlets were also closed for non-compliance with regulations.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, all metropolitan police departments, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, community policing forums, and private security companies.
“The operation highlights what coordinated policing can achieve. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and will continue to conduct similar operations to reduce crime,” said Lieutenant General Mthombeni.
